DECATUR — Police said a Decatur mother endangered her children Tuesday afternoon after patrol officers found twin 3-year-old girls and a 1-year-old girl had been left home alone.
Detective Sgt. Chris Copeland said neighbors called police about 5 p.m. to report that one of the 3-year-olds and the 1-year-old were outside their home on the city's southwest side and unsupervised. Copeland said patrol officers entered the home for a safety check and found the other 3-year-old child asleep inside with no adults present.
“As the officers were trying to determine where the mother was, she arrived home at about 5:25 p.m.” Copeland said. “So from when the neighbors called us to that time, she had left the children alone for at least that long.”
Police said a neighbor told officers that one of the children told them they had awoken to find their mother gone.
The 23-year-old mother was booked on a preliminary charge of endangering the life or health of her children, which is subject to review by the Macon County State’s Attorney’s Office. Copeland said the police also notified the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services.
