DECATUR — Police say a convicted sex offender is facing new criminal charges involving a 16-year-old girl and breaking sex offender registration rules by using an unreported online identity.

The 23-year-old Decatur man was arrested Friday on preliminary charges of aggravated criminal sexual abuse and violating the Sex Offender Registration Act, which are subject to review by the Macon County State’s Attorney’s Office.

A sworn affidavit said the 16-year-old made contact with a “friend” on Facebook who turned out to be the man using another identity. This person urged the girl to send him nude pictures of herself in return for payments, and she told police she did send him pictures, the affidavit said.

Decatur police officer Erik Ethell, writing in the affidavit, said the girl informed the man she was younger than 18 and they had “numerous conversations” about her being a high school student.

The affidavit said the girl agreed to meet the man for sex, and this happened at a house he took her to after he picked her up in his car. Afterward, “(He) then dropped her off at high school,” Ethell said.

The affidavit said police later traced the man’s identity using the date of birth associated with the Facebook account he was using. The girl then identified his picture from a photo lineup.

After his arrest, Ethell said the man admitted to asking the girl for nude pictures and having sex with her. During their Facebook conversations, the man said he "thought" she was 18, the affidavit said.

Ethell said the man is required to register as a sex offender after being convicted of criminal sexual abuse involving a 14-year-old in 2013. He must register annually until 2023, and the law says he must inform police of all online instant messaging, chat room identities and “Internet communication identities that the sex offender uses or plans to use ...”

The man remained in the Macon County Jail on Monday in lieu of $150,000 bond.
