DECATUR — More details have emerged in the case of the Decatur School District teaching assistant accused of sending nude pictures of himself to a teenage girl.
A sworn affidavit signed by Decatur police detective Christopher Hale said Matthew E. Krause, 26, who was taken into custody at French Academy elementary school Friday where he has worked as a teaching assistant, acknowledged sending the pictures during questioning at police headquarters.
“Matthew stated he understood his rights and agreed to speak with me,” Hale wrote in the affidavit. “Matthew admitted to sending nude photos of himself … to the 14-year-old girl. Matthew admitted to having conversations in the Snapchat App about having sex with the 14-year-old female.”
Hale said the student, who is age 14 now, told him she had received a nude photo during the 2016-2017 school year. The affidavit did not explain how the picture-sending came to light so that police could take action now. Detectives who could answer that question were not available Monday.
Krause, who was also described by police as the Eisenhower High School softball coach and a basketball coach at Thomas Jefferson Middle School, was booked on preliminary charges of indecent solicitation of a child and sexual exploitation of a child. Preliminary charges are subject to review by the Macon County State’s Attorney’s Office.
Decatur School District spokeswoman Maria Robertson said Monday she could not comment on Krause’s current employment status due to the ongoing police investigation.
Krause was free on $150,000 bond Monday with the condition he has no contact with the student. His arraignment is scheduled for April 24.
