Try 3 months for $3

DECATUR — A donation jar raising money for sick children was stolen Tuesday from Corner Gas, 1250 W. South Side Drive, by a former employee, Sgt. Chris Copeland said.

An employee working saw the suspect walk in, was helping another customer and saw the suspect exit without purchasing anything, Copeland said.

He said the employee noticed the donation jar, which raised money for the Children's Miracle Network Hospitals, was missing. Upon reviewing surveillance footage, the employee observed the suspect reach across the counter, take the donation jar and leave, Copeland said.

The employee told police at 2:49 p.m., and an officer arrested the suspect at his home, Copeland said. The amount inside of the jar was unknown, and the suspect is facing preliminary charges of theft under $300.

Karan Kang, the employee who reported the incident, said if the suspect stole something else, he would not have reported it.

"How low can you go?" he said.

The money is raised for sick children, so Kang said the theft really hurt him.
