DECATUR — Police report that a homeless man on a long walk back to the Water Street Mission in Decatur was beaten and robbed Wednesday night.

Detective Sgt. Chris Copeland with Decatur Police said the 39-year-old victim was punched in the head repeatedly by an assailant who accosted him about 11:25 p.m. in the 1700 block of North Water Street. “The victim was transported to hospital and there is the possibility he might have facial fractures,” Copeland added.

He said the victim had been nearing the end of a walk from a restaurant in Forsyth back to the Mission at 758 N. Water St. which the victim lists as his address. Copeland said the man’s backpack was taken and later recovered in a nearby alley by police; it’s not clear what was stolen.

The robber is described as a black male in his 30s, 5-feet, 10-inches tall, 150 pounds, with his hair worn in tight braids.
