DECATUR — A man police say repeatedly attacked a woman during an overnight ordeal in Decatur and who was arrested Sunday afternoon is now accused of raping her.

Nathan C. Parnell, 40, who was being held in the Macon County Jail on $75,000 bond following his arrest, is being held on an additional $1 million bond on a new charge of aggravated criminal sexual assault. Preliminary charges are subject to review by the state's attorney's office.

A sworn affidavit filed in the case said the woman had driven to Decatur Police Headquarters on Sunday morning, fleeing from Parnell who had followed her in another vehicle. She was able to get the attention of police as she pointed him out, yelling, "He's going to kill me," the affidavit said.

Police pursued Parnell before he was able to elude them, but he was later found at a residence on Sunday afternoon. He was arrested on preliminary charges of aggravated assault, domestic battery, criminal damage to property under $500, unlawful restraint and aggravated fleeing/eluding police.

The affidavit filed in Parnell's initial arrest said the woman told police she had been held against her will at a residence Saturday while Parnell, who she knows, repeatedly slapped, yelled at and threatened to kill her during the day and overnight.

In a supplemental affidavit for the new charge, the woman said Parnell also sexually assaulted her during the ordeal. In the affidavit, the woman said Parnell told her he was going to "teach her what it felt like to be raped" before repeatedly attacking her. She was able to escape Sunday morning "frantically driving, seeking help," the affidavit said.

The affidavit said Parnell is a registered sex offender, having been convicted of two counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse in Macoupin County in 2004. Parnell is scheduled to be arraigned May 28.
