Police: Man arrested in California on Macon County sex charges

MOUNT ZION — A 44-year-old California man is facing preliminary predatory child sex charges in Macon County after being apprehended in San Diego on a warrant, police say.

Lt. Mike Foster of the Mount Zion Police Department said a victim made a sexual assault complaint on July 30 regarding events occurring between 2005 and 2008 while the victim lived in Mount Zion and Decatur. Robert N. Meola was booked into the Macon County Jail early Thursday, records show.

The victim was under the age of 13 during the events described to police, Foster said. Mount Zion officers conducted follow-up interviews and investigations, working with law enforcement agencies in Texas and Utah. Foster said these agencies interviewed the victim and other witnesses.

Mount Zion police obtained an arrest warrant Oct. 24, and Meola was arrested Nov. 4 in San Diego, Foster said, with assistance from U.S. Marshals. He was brought to Macon County on Wednesday.

Jail records show he is facing preliminary charges of predatory criminal sexual assault, aggravated criminal sexual abuse and criminal sexual assault. Preliminary charges are subject to review by the Macon County State's Attorney's Office.

He is being held in lieu of $500,000 bond.
