DECATUR — Quonterace M. Dozier, 25, was arrested on a warrant by Decatur police Thursday in the fatal shooting of 24-year-old Ashton T. Gray last year.

A statement from Lt. Brian Cleary said Dozier had been located and arrested in Peoria and was now in custody in Peoria County. Cleary said the murder investigation was still continuing and detectives were still seeking more information and help; call (217) 424-2734 or Crime Stoppers at (217) 423-8477.

Police previously said Gray's body was found lying in a yard in the 2000 block of East William Street on Sept. 29, 2018, after officers responded to reports of shots being fired. He was taken by ambulance to the emergency room at Decatur Memorial Hospital, where Macon County Coroner Michael Day said Gray was pronounced dead at 9:06 p.m.

Day said Gray suffered two penetrating gunshot wounds to his torso, which resulted in severe internal damage.

Giving evidence at a Nov. 15 inquest into Gray's death, Detective Bryan Kaylor with Decatur Police said Gray had recently been released after serving a federal prison sentence and was living in a halfway house in Springfield. "He had been granted leave so he could visit Decatur to visit family," added Kaylor.

His family members lived on another address on East William Street and had found his body after witnesses heard multiple gunshots, Kaylor said.

Dozier was booked on a preliminary charge of first-degree murder. Preliminary charges are subject to review by the Macon County State's Attorney's Office.
