DECATUR — A group of men attacked a 44-year-old man in the parking lot of a Van Dyke Street housing complex, police said.

According to Sgt. Chris Copeland, police officers arrived at the scene at 12:43 a.m. Tuesday to find the victim with his face covered in a clear liquid and his eyes were closed. He told the officers he had been pepper sprayed and battered by a group of males who left the area eastbound on foot.

A backpack was stolen with various contents including college material and important identification, police said. A witness who refused to be identified confirmed the incident.

The victim was taken to Decatur Memorial Hospital, Copeland said.
