Police: 'Numerous' shell casings recovered after shots fired on Decatur's east side

DECATUR — Police officers responding to a shots fired call Tuesday night found "numerous" shell casings, but no damage or injuries were reported.

In a news release, Decatur police detective Sgt. Chris Copeland said police received a call about shots fired at 7:30 p.m. in the area of East Hickory and North Illinois streets on the city's east side. Officers found shell casings in the street, Copeland said.

"No victims or damage were reported," Copeland said. "Witnesses reported seeing an orange or yellow older model pickup truck in the area which may have been involved."

He said this incident did not appear to be related to the shooting of a man on East Johns Avenue later Tuesday night. That man was being treated in a hospital for gunshot injuries not considered life-threatening.
