DECATUR — Police say they recovered a 9mm handgun while searching a vehicle Wednesday afternoon and arrested the driver, who had prior felony gun charges.

Sgt. Chris Copeland said a caller told dispatch they saw an occupant of a gray van pull up to the side of a home in the 800 block of East Lawrence Street and load a gun. Officers arrived to the area around 4:04 p.m. and spotted a vehicle resembling the one described by the caller.

Copeland said officers saw three subjects in the vehicle, from which was emanating the odor of raw cannabis. A search was conducted, and police found a loaded 9mm handgun with one round in the chamber located under the driver's seat.

Officers arrested the 24-year-old driver. He was booked into the Macon County Jail and is facing preliminary charges of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon, both subject to review by the Macon County State's Attorney's Office.

He is being held in the Macon County Jail in lieu of $75,000.
