DECATUR — A 44-year-old Decatur woman, visiting a drug overdose patient in the hospital, was arrested after a nurse caught her snorting cocaine in the patient’s bathroom, police said.

A sworn statement from Decatur police Officer Tim Wittmer said the woman was taken into custody Friday morning at HSHS St. Mary’s Hospital. She was booked on a preliminary charge of possession of a controlled substance; preliminary charges are subject to review by the state attorney’s office.

Wittmer said a nurse noticed how the woman kept disappearing and would vanish into the patient’s bathroom for “an extended period” of time. “(The nurse) stated that she opened the door to the bathroom and observed (the woman) to be standing at the sink with her finger near her nose as if snorting drugs from her fingernail,” Wittmer added.

The nurse saw a clear plastic baggie on the bathroom counter and grabbed it; Wittmer said the baggie was later found to contain a substance that field-tested positive for the presence of cocaine.

Wittmer also said that, while he was speaking to the woman, she took out a packet of cigarettes and he noticed a plastic bag inside holding yellow pills. He said the woman told him the pills were Xanax, another controlled substance.

Macon County Jail records showed the woman remained in custody Monday night in lieu of posting bail set at $5,000.
