DECATUR — Police investigations continued Sunday into a shooting incident Saturday afternoon on a Decatur street.

Sgt. Timothy Maxwell said Decatur Police officers were just a block away dealing with an unrelated matter when they heard multiple gunshots at 12:50 p.m. coming from the 800 block of West Wood Street.

“The officers just ran across the block to where it was all going down,” Maxwell said.

The shooting suspects had already fled in a vehicle and Maxwell said police found a 29-year-old Decatur man who said he had been shot at but had escaped unharmed. “We also recovered five shell casings from a handgun,” added Maxwell. “But nobody was shot, nobody was injured and we didn’t find any property that had been hit by gunfire, either.”

Maxwell said the apparent intended victim, who was with a woman, said he had been walking away from the suspects when they started shooting at him, but provided few other details.

“He said he doesn’t know why he was shot at,” Maxwell said. “He doesn’t appear to have been very cooperative, but we've got a couple of witnesses we talked to and some leads to go off of."

Any witnesses or anyone with information about the suspects can call Decatur Police at (217)424-2711 or call CrimeStoppers at (217) 423-8477.
