DECATUR — Police said a 19-year-old Edinburg man who told them he was in Decatur driving around looking for narcotics to buy was shot and wounded by a man who flagged down his vehicle early Sunday.
Detective Sgt. Chris Copeland said the victim had been in the area of Stuart Avenue and North Warren Street just before 2:30 a.m. when he was shot. Copeland said the bullet went through the victim’s right palm and wrist and then hit his left elbow and bicep.
“I understand he was transported to Springfield for surgery,” said Copeland, who described the wound as not life-threatening.
“He said the male who flagged him down pulled a chrome pistol from his pants, stuck it in the passenger side window and fired a single shot,” Copeland said.
The victim managed to get away and drive himself to the area of East Grand Avenue and North Warren Street, where he got out of the vehicle and “went looking for help,” Copeland said.
Police don’t have a detailed description of the shooter and are appealing for help and witnesses. Call (217) 424-2734 or Crime Stoppers at (217) 423-8477 (TIPS).
