DECATUR — An adult son entrusted by his mother with their rent money told police it was stolen by his girlfriend Saturday night.

Detective Sgt. Chris Copeland said the 44-year-old mother told police she had told her son, 24, to put the more than $500 amount somewhere safe until it was paid.

“She found out later he kept it in his pocket with his own money,” said Copeland. The son said he had it when he fell asleep at the family home in the 1800 block of North Church Street while his 31-year-old girlfriend was visiting.

“He said he woke up during the night to find his girlfriend had left and the money in his pocket was gone,” added Copeland.
