Police: Two men caught burglarizing cars on Decatur's west side

DECATUR — Police said they have arrested two opportunist burglars early Tuesday who were walking along stealing from unlocked vehicles on the Decatur’s west side.

A sworn affidavit from Decatur patrol officer Megan Welge said she came across the two men, both age 20, about 1 a.m. at West Forest and South Dennis avenues. Welge said both were carrying backpacks and gave conflicting accounts about why they were wandering along the road at that hour.

Welge said one man at first gave her a false identification and was uncooperative, but the other described his partner as trying car doors as they walked around for about an hour, stealing loose change and other items from vehicles that were open. Welge said one of the backpacks the men carried turned out to be stolen, and the officer also recovered prescription drugs, a quantity of cash and a charging cord for an iPhone.

Both men were jailed on preliminary charges of burglary, and the one accused of lying about his identity was booked on a further charge of obstructing identification; preliminary charges are subject to review by the Macon County State Attorney’s Office. The men remained in the Macon County Jail Thursday in lieu of posting bond set at $10,000 each.
