DECATUR — A 21-year-old woman was arrested Sunday after being accused of hitting her ex-boyfriend multiple times in the face and injuring him, police said.

The two had been dating and lived together, detective Sgt. Chris Copeland of the Decatur Police Department said. The two broke up earlier Sunday, and he still had permission from the suspect's mother to remain living in the home, Copeland said.

Copeland said the man told police he was lying on the couch when the woman began yelling at him after she had been going through his cellphone. The woman found text message conversations with other women on her ex-boyfriend's phone, Copeland said.

The man did not know how many times the woman hit him, but it was "a lot," Copeland said. He fled to the kitchen to avoid the woman, she followed him and continued to strike him in the face with closed fists, Copeland said.

The man was found with multiple scratches and bruises on his face, a swollen bottom lip and cut on his right eye, Copeland said.

The woman was booked into the Macon County Jail on a preliminary charge of domestic battery, which is subject to review by the Macon County State's Attorney's Office. She remained in the jail in lieu of $3,500 bail.
