Police: Decatur man arrested after strangling, threatening to kill girlfriend

Citing desire for jet service, park board recommends SkyWest Airlines for Decatur Airport

DECATUR — Police said a Decatur woman whose driving was being criticized by her boyfriend turned around and punched him in the head so hard it left bleeding wounds on the inside and outside of his lower lip.

A sworn affidavit said the 48-year-old woman then ordered the boyfriend, 45, out of her van Tuesday morning after he told her he had called police. The man told officers the force of the punch had broken one of his lower right side teeth but, writing in the affidavit, Officer Stephen Feurer said police weren’t able to observe whether any teeth were shattered.

Feurer said the victim said he had dated the woman “on and off” for the past three years and they were out driving together with the woman’s 3-year-old grandson also riding with them.

“(The man) stated he advised her to slow down several times, causing her to become angry,” said Feurer. “He stated after advising her to slow down, he turned his head to his left to check on the grandson and, when he was turning his head back toward the right, she punched him in the mouth with a closed fist causing injury and pain.”

The woman was booked on preliminary charges of aggravated battery and domestic battery; preliminary charges are subject to review by the state attorney’s office. The woman is free after posting $3,000 bond; she has been ordered to stay away from her boyfriend.
