DECATUR — Macon County State's Attorney Jay Scott is warning residents of a telephone scam targeting senior citizens that attempts to trick people into revealing personal information.

The caller will state the person's Social Security card has been suspended and tells the person to call a phone number with a 903 area code, Scott said. He said the scam is designed to trick victims into disclosing person information, which could lead to identity theft.

Scott said numerous reports have been made to the Elder Fraud Hotline on Tuesday, and most people indicated they received multiple identical calls. He advised residents to hang up, ignore any answering machine messages and not return the call.
