2 stole merchandise from Forsyth Menards, police say

FORSYTH — A woman who repeatedly stole merchandise from Menards in Forsyth and then tried to return it to the store for money was arrested and jailed Monday night, according to police reports.

A sworn affidavit from the Macon County Sheriff’s Office said the 28-year-old woman worked the thieve-and-return scheme with a 59-year-old male accomplice who had been arrested earlier.

Writing in the affidavit, Deputy Drake Lambdin said the man had been tracked down through his identification, presented during one of the return transactions, and information gained from him had helped identify the woman.

Lambdin said police had first been contacted about the thefts on Sept. 9: “(The store’s) loss prevention officer informed me of a female and older male who had entered the store multiple days in a row and were observed via CCTV footage to have stolen merchandise each time,” added Lambdin

“The thefts and return transactions were recorded via CCTV … Total loss to Menards was $432.98.”

The woman was booked on a preliminary charge of felony retail theft; preliminary charges are subject to approval by the state’s attorney. Macon County Jail records showed the woman remained in custody Tuesday night in lieu of posting $10,000 bail. The male accomplice is free after making bail set at $1,000.
