DECATUR — A 24-year-old man shot dead Saturday evening was identified Sunday as 24-year-old Christopher Stone.

Macon County Chief Deputy Coroner Dee Coventry said Stone was pronounced dead at 5:38 p.m. at HSHS St. Mary’s Hospital. “Mr. Stone died as the result of multiple gunshot wounds,” Coventry said in a statement. “The shooting took place in the 1100 block of East Cantrell Street.”

In an earlier statement, Detective Sgt. Steve Carroll with Decatur Police said Stone had been found in a parking lot on the south side of the street by officers responding to reports of shots fired.

Carroll said detectives were “investigating leads, interviewing witnesses and processing evidence” as their inquiries continued. Police are asking for anyone with information to come forward; contact them directly at (217) 424-2711 or call Crime Stoppers at (217) 423-TIPS (8477).

Coventry said an autopsy was scheduled at the McLean County Coroner’s Office and an inquest would follow.
