CLINTON — A DeWitt County woman accused of animal abuse failed to appear in court Wednesday for a scheduled court appearance.

“A warrant has been issued for her arrest, and so we will deal with it once she gets picked up,” DeWitt County State’s Attorney Dan Markwell said.

Animal abuse charges were filed last month against Ashlee Kemplin, 25, of Wapella who is accused of being a woman seen in a video posted on social media apparently abusing a dog. The DeWitt County Sheriff’s Office investigated, and a charge of cruelty to animals was filed on Aug. 13.

DeWitt County Sheriff Jared Shofner previously said the dog was transferred to an unnamed animal adoption agency and was expected to be placed in a new home.

The charge is a misdemeanor.
