DECATUR — A 22-year-old woman has been arrested in the New Year's Day stabbing death of a 38-year-old man in Decatur, police said in a news release.

Decatur police detective Sgt. Chris Copeland said Billiejo L. Soyster faces a preliminary charge of first-degree murder following her arrest Tuesday morning. Preliminary charges are subject to review by the Macon County State's Attorney's Office.

Copeland said officers responding at 4:11 a.m. to the 500 block of East Division Street found a man suffering from an apparent stab wound to the chest. Officers performed CPR on the man until emergency medical services were arrived. The man was taken to Decatur Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Copeland said.

Investigators processed the scene and conducted interviews of several residents, including Soyster, described by police as the victim's girlfriend. She was arrested and booked into the Macon County Jail, Copeland said.

The identity of the victim will be released by the Macon County Coroner's Office, Copeland said.

Since 1993, Decatur has had two other murders on New Year’s Day, Copeland said. James Cason was shot to death in the 1100 block of East Johns Avenue at 6:25 p.m. on Jan. 1, 1996, and John Burger was stabbed to death in the 300 block of West North Street at 2:33 p.m. on Jan. 1, 2007.
