DECATUR — A Decatur woman was shot and wounded and a Decatur man arrested on drug charges after a home invasion Thursday night in the 2200 block of East Hendrix Street.

Detective Sgt. Chris Copeland said the 22-year-old gunshot victim was hit in the left thigh but he said he understood the wound was not believed to be life-threatening.

The 37-year-old arrested man lives in the home and was not a suspect in the wounding of the woman. Copeland said he was taken into custody after police, arriving at the house at 11:08 p.m. to investigate the home invasion and shooting, found and seized 8.8 grams of methamphetamine and more than 46 grams of cannabis. They also located a sawed-off shotgun.

Copeland said the resident arrived as the police investigation was progressing and he has now been booked on preliminary charges of possession of a controlled substance, possession of cannabis and possession of a firearm by a felon.

Describing the home invasion, Copeland said a 38-year-old female resident of the house said two men had forced their way through the front door. “They were demanding money and, during the home invasion, one shot was fired (wounding the woman),” Copeland added.

The home invasion suspects are described as black men, one about 5-feet 10-inches tall, of skinny build and wearing a black T-shirt with some kind of face-covering. His accomplice was described as being aged in his 20s, 6-feet to 6-feet 2-inches tall, of medium to stocky build, hair similar to a short Afro and wearing all black clothing and no facial covering.

Copeland said detectives are still working the case as police inquiries continue. Anyone with information can call (217) 424-2734 or Crime Stoppers at (217) 423-8477.
