SULLIVAN -- Stephen Decatur Middle School science teacher Amanda Burtsfield Kent, 26, died Friday morning when another car struck her as she was parked along Illinois 121 two miles west of Sullivan.

A news release from the Moultrie County Sheriff's Office said Ame Shelton of Decatur was westbound in her SUV about 7 a.m. when she crossed the white fog line and hit Kent's car, which was stopped with mechanical problems. Shelton, who refused treatment, was ticketed for improper lane usage.

Kent was on her way from her home in Charleston to her job in Decatur. She was a native of Creve Coeur and a graduate of Eastern Illinois University.

Lynn Reed, Moultrie County coronor, pronounced Kent dead at the scene at 7:20 a.m.

Kelli Smith, account executive with DCC marketing, said grief counselors were at Stephen Decatur Middle School on Friday and would return next week.
