DECATUR — Decatur public schools are set to close early Wednesday and Thursday due to heat.
In a statement released Tuesday afternoon, officials said the district facilities will close two hours earlier than a regular school day on Wednesday, Sept. 11 and Thursday, Sept. 12. Pershing pre-k morning programs will dismiss at 11 a.m. and there will not be an afternoon program, according to the press release.
Our Lady of Lourdes will dismiss at 1 p.m. both Wednesday and Thursday. Extended Care after school will be available on the early dismissal days.
Any pre-k or special education students without a Latch-Key Agreement who do not have an adult present at their homes will be dropped off at the SEAP doors located at the Harris campus and parents will be called and asked to pick up their student immediately.
Elementary and middle school athletic practices are cancelled. Elementary school wrestling will still take place at the high schools. Middle school soccer games and Garfield vs. Stephen Decatur Middle School boys baseball are canceled. High school practices and game cancellations will be determined by building administration, following IHSA guidelines for heat.

The temperature will hit a high of 91 degrees on Wednesday and a high of 92 degrees on Thursday according to the National Weather Service in Lincoln.
One major goal of the district's ongoing facilities plan is to add air conditioning in all Decatur school buildings.
