Durfee Veterans Day tribute

DECATUR – Durfee Magnet School will hold a Veterans Day celebration 9 a.m. Monday, Nov. 12, at the school, 1077 W. Grand Ave.

Veterans from the community are invited to attend.

Breakfast after the Bell

Several Illinois school districts were awarded Breakfast After the Bell grants to provide breakfast to students at no charge to the families.

Rise and Shine Illinois, in partnership with Share Our Strength's No Kid Hungry program, funded 31 school districts, including Bloomington, with three schools; Central A&M, two schools; Shelbyville, four schools; Taylorville, one school.

Schools can apply for funds at riseandshineillinois.org.

Pork Producers offer scholarship

The National Pork Producers Council has announced the 2019 Lois Britt Memorial Pork Industry Scholarship, with 10 $2,500 scholarships awarded to students who intend to pursue a career in the pork industry.

Students must:

  • Be a current undergraduate student in a two-year swine program or four-year college of agriculture and a U.S. citizen. High school students are not eligible.
  • Write a brief letter indicating what role the applicant plans to play in the pork industry after graduation.
  • Submit an essay of 750 words or less describing an issue the applicant sees confronting the pork industry today or in the future, including possible solutions.
  • Prepare a cover sheet with the following information: Name of applicant; name of school; year in school; contact information, including home and school mailing address, telephone number and email address.

Submit the items online or by email no later than Friday, Jan. 4, at www.nppc.org/programs/scholarships or info@nppc.org.
