National Merit award finalists

DECATUR — Macon County can boast of four National Merit Scholarship finalists this year.

The final awards will be announced on May 9 and each winner will receive a $2,500 scholarship. The honor is decided based on a student's performance on the SAT test. Some 1.6 million students take the test annually, and of those, only 15,000 are finalists for the scholarship.

Locally, the students are:

  • Pele Garrity, Mount Zion High School
  • Katerina Gorou, Maroa-Forsyth High School
  • Tegan Lakshmanan, St. Teresa High School
  • Andrew Schollmeier, Mount Zion High School.

Fairy Tale Ball at museum

DECATUR — The annual three-night Fairy Tale Ball at the Children's Museum of Illinois will be 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, April 19-21.

Princesses from Princess Party Chicago will perform every 30 minutes during all three nights of the Fairy Tale Ball, and between performances, the princesses will pose for photos. Thursday's princesses are Elsa, Anna and Moana; Friday's are Elena, Rapunzel and Anna; Saturday's are Elsa, Elena and Moana.

The cost is $16, or $10 for museum members, with dinner catered by Cafe DMH. Registration is available online cmofil.org or call (217) 423-5437, or in person at the museum. Proceeds support the museum and its programming.

New Heartland president named

NORMAL — Keith Cornille has been named president of Heartland Community College, the fourth president in the school's history.

He comes to Heartland from Madison Area Technical College in Wisconsin, where he is executive vice president/chief student services officer. Pending the Heartland Board of Trustees' approval of his contract at the April 17 meeting, Cornille will begin his new job on July 1.

His parents reside in Mount Zion, and his sister lives in Decatur.

St. Teresa golf outing May 14

DECATUR — The annual St. Teresa High School Golf Outing will be Monday, May 14, at South Side Country Club.

The cost is $150 per person, or $600 per team, and includes lunch, awards, happy hour and hors d'oeurves, cart and greens fees and a mulligan. Lunch will be 11 a.m., with shotgun start at 12:15 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. awards and happy hour. A

Health care adult education

DECATUR — Out-of-school adults ages 18 to 24 who are interested in working in the health care field are invited to an information session on a free certified nurse assistant class.

Sessions will be 10 a.m. and noon Wednesday, April 18, in the Decatur Public Library's Madden Auditorium. Each session lasts approximately 90 minutes and attendees should plan to stay for the whole session. Call (217) 875-8751.
