Meridian Hawk Hangout

Meridian Hawk Hangout, an after-school program at Blue Mound United Methodist Church, will begin on Sept. 9.

The program offers homework assistance and fellowship 3 to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday to Meridian Middle School students. Registration forms are available at Blue Mound United Methodist Church and Macon United Methodist Church, or students may register at the first session. The program is free to students and is funded by a grant from Macon County Mental Health Board and provides a healthy snack, help with homework, games and activities with the aim of promoting good study habits.

Millikin University

Millikin University welcomed its largest first-year class since 2012 on Aug. 26, with 490 freshmen, a 4 percent increase from last year.

The first-year class includes 96 honors students at 116 international students from 35 countries, an increase from 95 international students last year. International students comprise 5 percent of the 34 percent of new students who come from outside of Illinois. New this year is Millikin's Macon Matters Scholarship Initiative, which awarded $22,000 Merit Scholarships to all new traditional first-year or transfer students who attended school or community college in Macon County.

Millikin is also offering new majors in arts administration, computer science, exercise science, finance, health promotion and sport and recreation management.

Children's Choir

Millkin's Children's Choir fall semester begins on Sept. 10. The choir has three levels for students 5-18 and performs several concerts each semester. 

Cost is $105 per semester for Dolce Choir, grades K-2; and $155 per semester for Cantabile Choir, grades 3-5, and Concert Youth Chorale, grades 6-12. No prior experience is necessary.
