Option 3: New pool in Nelson Park 1024

Option 3, which seemed to receive favor from most park district leaders: Build a new aquatics facility in Nelson Park, at a cost of $9.2 million.

DECATUR — The Decatur Park District will hold a special meeting from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 25. in the Scovill Golf Course Banquet Facility, 3909 W. Main St., to continue the discussion about aquatics.

The public is encouraged to attend.

On Oct. 11, the park district held a public forum presenting three options for its aquatics center – a renovation of the Fairview Park Aquatic Center, a rebuild at Fairview or a new, larger water park at Nelson Park.

The Fairview renovation's cost was $5.3 million but would only postpone a rebuild for 15 years. The Fairview rebuild would cost $7.5 million but would be limited in attractions and parking because of a lack of space. The Nelson Park water park would cost $9.2 million and would be the biggest with the most attractions.

Members of the Park District Board seemed to prefer the Nelson Park option, which could be accomplished without raising taxes but wanted to hear more feedback before proceeding.

The board is expected to discuss the three proposals and receive public feedback at the Tuesday meeting, and could vote to move forward with one of the designs.
