DECATUR — HSHS St. Mary's Hospital broke ground Monday on a new two-story office building that will add 29,000 square feet to the hospital campus.
Plans for the $12 million project were first announced in February. It will be located in what had been a parking lot on the southern portion of the property along East Lakeshore Drive.
A variety of physicians from different specialties will practice in the building, Tim DeGarmo, director of facilities for the hospital, previously said. The goal is to allow patients to visit all of their HSHS Medical Group providers in one location.
Construction is expected to take about a year.
Hospital leaders plan to add a parking lot to the west along 16th Street to make up for the spaces taken up by the new building.
The work comes as St. Mary's is also undertaking a $9 million renovation to its intensive care unit that began in December. That construction is expected to double the space and make it easier for families to be with patients. The new ICU facility is expected to open Sept. 9.
