MOUNT ZION — Bailey Huddleston, a junior at Mount Zion High School, died Monday after a long battle with osteopetrosis, a rare form of brittle bone disease.

Mount Zion High School Principal Cheryl Warner told parents and students about Bailey's death in an audio recording Monday evening.

“Her sweet, positive spirit will be greatly missed by all,” Warner said, adding that the district had implemented a plan to support students as they grieve.

“We all should expect and try to understand there may be a variety of emotions and responses to this loss,” Warner said. “The most important thing we can do is be supportive and encourage open expression of feelings.”

Bailey was diagnosed with osteopetrosis shortly after birth and underwent a bone marrow transplant in 2010. A community of volunteers worked together that year to build a new house that would provide a more sterile environment for Bailey.

A GoFundMe account established in August to benefit the family said that Bailey was undergoing treatment at Riley Children’s Hospital in Indianapolis.
