CLINTON — DeWitt County authorities are investigating the death of a 12-year-old girl who was found unresponsive at a residence Friday morning in Clinton.

Clinton police and emergency medical crews responded at 6:36 a.m. to the 400 block of North Maple Street.

Police said the girl was unresponsive and, at 6:55 a.m., DeWitt County Coroner Randy Rice pronounced Daphne J. Peavler dead at the scene. She was a student at Clinton Junior High School.

Clinton School District officials were notified, police said. Clinton School District 15 responded to the death with a message on its Facebook page.

"It is, once again, with a heavy heart that we inform our district family of the loss of one of our students. Sadly, one of our CJHS students passed away at her family's home early this morning.

"Grief counselors, administrators, and staff are on site at the junior high now to assist them.

"Our thoughts are with the family during this difficult time."

In September, the community mourned the loss of Kloe Weiss, 14, who was killed Sept. 22 in an ATV crash in rural DeWitt County. A friend who was with her was injured.

Kloe was a freshman at Clinton High School.

“The number of schools that have reached out to our CHS family is overwhelming,” Principal Jerry Wayne said at the time. “Thanks to everyone for being a support system during this very difficult time. It’s times like that which remind us how much of a family we truly are.”

Her death was the second time this calendar year that a student at Clinton High School died. In March, Spencer Toohill, 17, a junior at the school, was killed in a single-vehicle car crash in rural Wapella.

Additional information about the circumstances of the girl's death was unavailable.

The investigation into Friday's death is ongoing, said police, who are being assisted by the coroner's office, the DeWitt County Sheriff's Office and Illinois State Police Crime Scene Services.
