DECATUR— The Decatur Police Department made 16 impaired driving arrests and issued 27 seat belt citations during a Labor Day traffic safety enforcement campaign between Aug. 16 to Sept. 3.

Sgt. Steve Hagemeyer in a statement said, "Through the Labor Day enforcement effort, we helped to make our roads safer and spread the word that preventing impaired driving is a matter of life or death."

During the 2018 campaign, 14 people were arrested for drunken driving, police said. Officers made 19 arrests for impaired driving during the 2017 campaign.

The department joined other law enforcement agencies in the state during the "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaign, ramping its usual enforcement efforts. The campaign is administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation with federal dollars managed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
