Coroner identifies man found dead in Decatur parking lot

DECATUR — The 20-year-old man found dead in a Decatur parking lot has been identified by the Macon County coroner.

Dontrez O. Williams was pronounced dead early Saturday after suffering a single penetrating gunshot wound to the head, Coroner Michael Day said in a statement. Williams had lived in Chicago, but was staying in Decatur recently, according to Day, and it was anticipated he would be moving there permanently.

Sgt. Steve Carroll previously said police were sent to the 1200 block of North Edward Street around 1:15 a.m. on a report of someone having been shot and found the man identified as Williams. Carroll said Saturday that police were investigating leads, interviewing witnesses and processing physical evidence.

Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Decatur Police Department at 217-424-2711 or Crime Stoppers at 217-423-TIPS (8477).

An inquest is pending.
