DECATUR — The Decatur Police Department is taking part in an end-of-summer traffic safety campaign from Aug. 16 to Sept. 3, cracking down on drunken, unbuckled and distracted drivers.
"Our goal is to help ensure that our community's residents and visitors make it home safely after the party ends," patrol Sgt. Steve Hagemeyer said in a statement. "We'll be out in force to keep impaired drivers off the roads."
During the Labor Day traffic safety campaign in 2018, Decatur officers arrested 14 people for drunken driving. The Decatur Police Department made 19 arrests for drunken driving during the same campaign in 2017.

"If you'll be celebrating, we urge you to plan ahead for a sober ride. It could be a matter of life or death," Hagemeyer said.
The campaign is funded by federal traffic safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation.
