DECATUR — The Decatur Police Department made one driving under the influence arrest and issued eight seat belt citations during the St. Patrick's Day enforcement period, the department said in a news release.

"Because of the efforts by our community leaders to spread the word about alcohol and drug-impaired driving, the streets were made safer during the St. Patrick's Day holiday," Sgt. Steve Hagemeyer said. "We strongly enforce traffic laws for one reason — to save lives."

The Decatur Police Department teamed up with state and other local law enforcement and highway safety partners during the St. Patrick's Day enforcement campaign, Hagemeyer said.

The campaign was funded by the federal highway safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation.
