Try 3 months for $3

DECATUR — The bridge on Macon County Highway 57 (85th Street), also known as the Dalton City Blacktop, about 1 mile south of U.S. 36, has been closed, the highway department said.

In a news release Friday morning, County Engineer Bruce Bird said this bridge, which is between Hunters Crossing and Country Side Drive, already had been reduced to one lane with a stoplight traffic control due to its deteriorating condition.

The bridge, which is scheduled to be replaced this year, has been closed due to large trucks disobeying the weight limit and warning signs that have been posted for several months, Bird said. He noted the bridge has been classified as a "fracture-critical" bridge, which means if it were to fail it would do so "catastrophically."

"It would collapse immediately and fall into the creek below, most likely causing severe injuries or worse to the drivers and passengers of any vehicle involved in the accident," Bird said in the news release.

Bird said safety inspectors and engineers with the Illinois Department of Transportation and county highway staff agreed the bridge must be completely closed now for safety reasons.
