DECATUR — A scam email is circulating and pretends to be from the "Department of Motor Vehicles," according to the Decatur Police Department.

The scam email states that the recipient was caught speeding and needs to send money to an online account within 72 hours. The police department said recipients of the email should recognize it as a scam and delete it immediately.

The Secretary of State's Office does not send automatically generated email tickets, officer George D. Kestner a crime prevention officer with the Decatur Police Department, said in a statement.

“If you have any questions regarding the status of your vehicle, licensing and driver’s license status then please contact the Illinois Secretary of State," he said.
