ASSUMPTION — State police said an 87-year-old Auburn man was killed Wednesday afternoon after a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of U.S. 51 and Christian County Highway 6 in Assumption.

Police said in a statement the crash happened at 1:37 p.m. Initial investigation showed that a Buick LaCrosse was traveling west on the county road while a Dodge Avenger traveled south on 51.

The Buick entered the intersection and was struck by the Dodge, police said.

The Auburn man, who was a passenger in the Buick, needed to be extricated from the vehicle and taken by ambulance to Pana Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead by the Christian County Coroner's Office.

Police said the man's name is being withheld until his family has been notified.

The 84-year-old Auburn woman who drove the Buick was airlifted to an area hospital for treatment, police said. The 64-year-old man who drove the Dodge refused medical treatment at the scene.

Police said charges are pending further investigation of the crash.
