DECATUR – A 21-year-old Decatur man died Friday from injuries he sustained after the vehicle he was driving crashed into Lake Decatur, police said in a news release.

Two children in the vehicle, ages 8 and 11, sustained serious, but non-life threatening injuries.

According to the release, the accident occurred at 7:52 p.m. near the intersection of North Country Club Road and East Cantrell Street.

The release stated that a mid-size SUV had left the roadway to the south, went into a grassy area surrounding the lake and ultimately overturned and became submerged in the lake. It was discovered that three individuals were trapped in the overturned and submerged vehicle.

With combined rescue efforts of multiple agencies, all three individuals were extricated from the vehicle and transported by ambulance to local hospitals.

Decatur Fire Department Battalion Chief Jim Ohl said the male was in cardiac arrest when he was pulled from the vehicle.

The fire department said in a statement later Friday that one Decatur firefighter was also taken to Decatur Memorial Hospital to be treated for cuts to his hand.

Members of the Fatal Accident Investigation Team responded to the scene. The 3800 block of East Cantrell was closed for more than four hours.
