What's the story behind the formation of Decatur IL Moms?

I was born and raised in Decatur. My grandfather, Bill Eichenauer, loved this city to its core, so I think it was in my blood to see Decatur in a different light.

I moved away for college and started my career and family in Milwaukee, WI. In 2010, we were expecting our second child – and decided we wanted to be closer to family to raise our boys. We were fortunate enough, that with the move I could begin staying home full time.

Upon my new job title of stay-at-home mom, I was eager to give my kids the best childhood experiences available. Unfortunately, I found it very difficult to Google and navigate all the local activities in Decatur.

That’s where the idea of Decatur IL Moms evolved, and local moms have looked to my website and social media since 2011.

Through this organization, I have formed relationships with local businesses and became a mom liaison to new activities in our area. Decatur IL Moms played an intricate roll in forming Toddler Times at both the Decatur Indoor Sports Center and the Decatur Family YMCA, which are still put on weekly!

I also work diligently to promote the already established programming like BabyTALK and Children Museum of Illinois events that are huge assets to Decatur.

What's the best thing about running the group?

Moms are all just trying the best they can. If I can make parenting easier for one mom, I have reached my mission.

What are some of you and your family's favorite things to do in the community?

That list is very long! You can find my annual Summer Bucket List that is published every year on Decatur IL Moms.

As a family, you can always find us at Decatur Youth Hockey Association games during the winter and floating on Lake Decatur during the summer.

Activities my kids have always loved are the Downtown Trolley, visiting Scovill Zoo (almost weekly!), seeing what is new at the Children’s Museum of Illinois and our local parks are endless with activities!

Is there a family activity that you'd like to see brought to the city?

I have always dreamed of a splash pad in our community, and our local community organizations are working hard to make that happen! Now if you asked my kids, they would want a trampoline park – they have even selected the perfect buildings in town to build one.

If you could describe yourself in three words, what would they be?

Dedicated, click-list lover and positive.
