What's new at Homework Hangout this year?

Homework Hangout Club (HHC) is currently expanding a lot of its programs, including our apprenticeship programs that provide training towards placement into (U.S.) Department of Labor registered apprenticeships with full-time employment and living wages, as well as our youth employment program for young adults ages 16-24.

Also, along with our annual Decatur Christmas Community Celebration, HHC is seeking donations to create a Fall Family Festival for Decatur on Oct. 25. Please call us at (217) 872-2306 if you would like to know more.

If funding were no obstacle, what's something you would like to accomplish at Homework Hangout?

I would put thousands of low-income residents to work through our apprenticeship programs, working full time with benefits at living wages while learning and receiving academic credentials for their industry. I believe that would be a catalyst of great change for this community.

What's the best thing about your job?

It evolves. HHC has grown significantly in the 20-plus years I have worked there. Many think of us as simply an after-school program. While we still have that after-school program here, we have evolved into a training institute for Central Illinois, providing construction and apprenticeship training programs to unemployed, underemployed and underserved populations of all ages. This growth has made my job significantly more complex, but I love the challenge.

Outside of work, how do you like to spend your spare time?

I have spare time?

In all seriousness, I am an avid movie buff and once worked as a film critic. My significant other and I garden and cook together and try to organize board game nights among friends when possible. We are also trivia aficionados. We have won so many glasses from Decatur Brew Works that we really should open our own bar.

If you could describe yourself in three words, what would they be?

Literal constructivist nerd.
