Name: Karalee Misner

Age: 32

Occupation: Director of marketing, Decatur Park District

City of residency: Decatur

For those who might not be familiar, what does a director of marketing do?

My job is to establish marketing strategies and implement and monitor effectiveness of comprehensive marketing plans for the park district and all facilities/service areas, including Decatur Airport, Decatur Indoor Sports Center, Decatur Parks Foundation, golf courses, Overlook Adventure Park, Scovill Zoo, recreation/special recreation programs and arts programs. I also coordinate and plan all media relations for the district. Additionally, I oversee marketing staff, special events and promotional activities of the park district and support the activities and events of the Decatur Parks Foundation.

What's the best thing about working in marketing?

Getting to be both creative and analytical. Trying new strategies and tactics to find what the community responds to by using the various components of branding, advertising, messaging and data to get people information that is relevant to their quality of life.

Do you have any advice for anyone who would like to start on a similar career path as you?

Network! Joining an area networking group like the Chamber of Commerce, Rotary or an association particular to your industry is invaluable. Connecting with others in the marketing field to ask questions to, learn best practices from and bounce ideas off of has been a key in my career.

Outside of work, do you have any hobbies?

My kids are all involved in extracurricular activities, therefore their hobbies are mine for now, including show choir, gymnastics and dance. I like to cook, dance and enjoy live music.

What's your favorite Decatur park to visit?

We love Scovill Park and Zoo. As a family, we will pack up a picnic and ride our bicycles over and spend hours there between the playground, sculpture park and zoo. We are very excited about the train expansion project!
