Tell me about Coalition of Neighborhood Organizations.

The Coalition of Neighborhood Organizations has been around since 1991, and was established to serve as an umbrella organization for all neighborhood groups in the city of Decatur. We aim to support the formation and development of more desirable neighborhoods in Decatur by improving all aspects of safe and enjoyable living. Our monthly meetings, held on the fourth Tuesday of every month, provide community members with a forum to share information and participate in collaborative problem solving efforts addressing issues each neighborhood may be facing.

How did you become involved/what is your background?

I grew up in Indianapolis and moved to Decatur to attend Millikin University. During my time at Millikin, I really found a love and passion for service and servant leadership. I applied for the community engagement and education coordinator position at Dove, Inc. and was introduced to CONO through my job. The former president happened to be stepping down at the time and they needed a replacement, so she asked me and I’ve been the president since January.

What are your responsibilities as community engagement and education coordinator and what does a typical day look like?

My responsibilities as the community engagement and education coordinator at Dove, Inc. include keeping in contact and acting as a liaison between the agency and Decatur’s organized neighborhood groups, to seek out unmet needs in our community, as well as coordinating the Beginning Awareness Basic Education Studies (BABES) program. My days tend to look pretty different, but typically I’m working to coordinate with elementary schools and volunteers to set up BABES presentations by day and attending neighborhood meetings/cleanups/events in the evenings.

What upcoming events are on the horizon for CONO and Dove?

The Annual CONO Awards are this month on Oct. 22, so we’re gearing up for that event to celebrate the outstanding volunteers and community members in our neighborhood organizations. October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, so Dove’s domestic violence program is having its annual candlelight ceremonies all month in the five counties we serve. Macon County’s candlelight service is Oct. 15 at 7 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Decatur. Our community services program is also getting ready for the 28th annual Coats for Kids coat drive, beginning on Oct. 16.

What do you do in your free time?

My free time is usually spent visiting with family and friends, reading, binge-watching Netflix, and volunteering in the community when I can.
