WARRENSBURG -- Marcia McGuire Gilman (February 14, 1934 – September 6, 2019)
Marcia McGuire Gilman passed away peacefully at her home on September 6, 2019. She is survived by her loving and devoted husband, Henry “Hank” Gilman, daughters Julie (Sam Porter), Cathi, and Lynn (Mike Williams) and grandchildren Matt Porter, Luke Porter, Callie Porter and Kate Williams.
Marcia was born on February 14, 1934 in Ames, Iowa to Melvin “Bud” McGuire and Mildred Buck McGuire. She was the youngest of three children. Her brother Kirk McGuire and sister Marilyn McGuire Ritts preceded her in death. Marcia had a special bond with her father, who took her on many weekend fishing trips and cross-country adventures, starting as a toddler.
Marcia and Hank met in high school and dated off and on during those years, but Marcia recounted that “he was always the one.” Their romance flourished after they went to different colleges. Marcia attended Colorado University and majored in education. She and Hank were married on June 5, 1956, following their graduations, and recently celebrated their 63rd anniversary.
Marcia was an avid and competitive golfer and bridge player throughout her life. She was a fabulous cook and a voracious reader. She belonged to many book clubs over the years. After ending her teaching career, she worked and volunteered at several libraries.
Those who knew Marcia well knew she was an adventurer at heart. She loved the mountains and the oceans, boating and water-sports, traveling, convertibles and playing cards. She and Hank also loved to gamble, and Tunica was a favorite destination of theirs in their later years. One of her nephews recounts driving with his “cool Aunt Marcia” when he was just 3, in her old jalopy that her Dad helped cut the top off of to make it a convertible. She then painted it pink with big polka dots. He will never forget sitting in the passenger seat, watching the road go by under his feet -- there was a giant hole in the floorboard!
Marcia lived a full and wonderful life, with the love of her life by her side. Her grandchildren brought her a special kind of joy and pride. In addition to her family, Marcia leaves behind many wonderful friends here in Fairfield Glade, in Illinois, Iowa, Colorado and California. Our family wants to particularly thank neighbors Donna and DJ Garrison for their loyal friendship over the years and most recently their tremendous help.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider donating to Hospice of Cumberland County, the Crossville Library, or a charity close to your heart.
At Marcia's request, there will be no formal memorial service. Crossville Memorial Crematory is in charge of arrangements.
Marcia's family will be arriving the weekend of September 14th and friends are welcome to stop by the house.
