SHELBYVILLE — A 49-year-old Shelbyville man was killed early Monday morning when he collided with a vehicle that crossed into his path, Illinois State Police said.
The accident occurred at 4:53 a.m. along Illinois 16 at County Road 1995 East in Shelby County.
According to preliminary findings, state police said a Chevrolet truck driven by Christopher P. Wood, 50, of Greenfield, Indiana, was traveling westbound on Illinois 16 when it ran off the right side of the road. State police said Wood overcorrected, causing the vehicle to slide across the median and into the eastbound lanes. A GMC truck driven by the Shelbyville man was traveling eastbound on Illinois 16 and struck Wood's truck in the passenger side when it entered the eastbound lane.
The Shelbyville man, who authorities haven't identified, died at the scene. Wood was taken to an area hospital. Neither of the drivers were wearing seat belts, state police said.
Wood was ticketed with driving while license suspended, operating an uninsured motor vehicle, improper lane usage, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, improper use of registration, no valid registration and failure to wear a properly adjusted seat belt.
