The Wagon

The Wagon, 1987 N. Jasper St., is relocating to 3190 N. Woodford St. at the start of 2019.

DECATUR — The Wagon, a Decatur restaurant renowned for its fried chicken and home-style meals at its 1987 N. Jasper St. location, is moving to a new home.

Owner Dave Jordan said the move to 3190 N. Woodford St., the former Moose Lodge, was prompted by the need for more room and a change in scenery for his customers.

“A lot of my customers have voiced concerns about coming into the area at night,” he said. “Things have changed in the 38 years since I’ve been here.”

Renovations have already begun, Jordan said, and the plan is to open at the new location in early January. The menu and staff will remain the same, he said.

The Wagon will remain open through New Year’s Eve, but will close on New Year’s Day to prepare for the opening at the new location, which Jordan said would take seven to 10 days.

The new building will have updated furnishings and more space. Jordan said the new location will be easier for new and established customers to find.

“I was off the beaten path (on North Jasper Street),” he said. “It (the North Woodford Street location) is in an area that is more conducive.”

The Wagon will still offer video gaming, Jordan said, but the machines will not be installed until the restaurant has been opened for a few weeks. Jordan said Illinois laws governing gaming rules require the delay.

As the restaurant gets comfortable in its new building, the owner said he hopes to add other features, such as a Sunday brunch or entertainment a couple of Saturdays a month.

From The Wagon Facebook page: "I’m doing this to improve the pleasure of my customers and not to upscale or become something we are not. I sincerely hope that all existing customers and hopefully new ones will give us the opportunity to show you that service truly is our business."

Patrons can follow The Wagon's progress on its Facebook page.
