CASEY — Crews cleaned up after a livestock hauler overturned on Interstate 70 between Casey and Greenup on Friday, dumping 3,000 piglets on the highway, Illinois State Police said.

The truck ran off the interstate when the driver became ill, police said. The animals were wrangled and loaded up by the Greenup Fire Protection District, Greenup and Casey police, the Illinois Department of Transportation and others.

The pigs are continuing to their destination in Indiana. 

About 100 piglets were killed, police said.

Illinois State Police said cleanup will continue through the afternoon. The driver was cited for improper lane usage.

Trooper Tammy Welborn with Illinois State Police in Effingham says the department is “thankful and proud” for the community effort.

This follows a crash causing pigs to run wild on Interstate 57 near Champaign March 1. That truck was carrying 178 pigs and shut down part of the freeway.
