EDGEWOOD -- State Police said a driver and his passenger were hurt and needed hospital treatment after their car was rear-ended and knocked into a ditch during a crash on Interstate 57 in rural Effingham County near Edgewood.

The accident happened at 3:12 a.m. Wednesday but details were only just released Sunday by State Police Sgt. Steven Korzenewski; no reason for the delay was given.

Korzenewski said the driver, a 48-year-old man from Urbana, and the passenger, a man aged 51 from Champaign, both were listed as being hurt and taken to HSHS St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital in Effingham.

Korzenewski said the other vehicle involved was driven by a 34-year-old man from Mississippi who was accompanied by a 30-year-old female passenger from Urbana, who were both listed as unhurt. Korzenewski said both vehicles were northbound but the driver from Mississippi was following to close and plowed into the back of the other driver’s car, shoving it into the ditch.

The 34-year-old Mississippi man was ticketed for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and the other driver was ticketed for having no insurance.
